Bauer Built: Supporting the Next Generation of Farmers
How important is it to invest in our nation’s next generation of farmers, veterinarians, biologists, and agricultural scientists?
Consider for a moment how big and complex the U.S. agriculture industry actually is: like, 354 million tons big. That’s the amount of corn our country produces yearly. Some of it goes into your morning bowl of cornflakes, some into your corn pudding. But a lot of it goes to feed the nearly 90 million head of cattle living in the U.S.
In fact, there are now more cattle in the U.S. than people in the states of California, Texas, and New York. Throw in Vermont and Montana, and those of us with only two legs would still be outnumbered.
Now add up the number of chickens (try 1.5 billion on for size), the tonnage for wheat, milk, eggs, etc., and you can begin to imagine the complexity, the size, and the demand for an industry that affects our lives on a daily, almost hourly basis.
It makes sense, in this context, to support the efforts of our future agriculture professionals, doesn’t it?
FFA and 4-H: Two Organizations Making a Difference
At Bauer Built Tire, we support our country’s next generation of farmers, veterinarians, biologists, and agricultural scientists by supporting FFA and 4-H. Both organizations believe in empowering our nation’s youth, especially those in rural areas where the farming communities are strong and vibrant. Both communities strive to offer young people real-time experiences to learn specific skills and explore possible careers in agriculture. People who don’t know about these two stellar youth programs are missing out!
The FFA—short for “Future Farmers of America”—has been around for a long time. It was started in the 1920s, at a time when young people seemed to be losing interest in the farm-related careers of their parents. Its founders envisioned an organization that would give the next generation “a greater opportunity for self-expression and for the development of leadership.” Since then, the FFA has been committed to providing individual students with educational, career, and leadership experiences. Today, it combines classroom education with practical field experience supervised by an expert.
Like FFA, 4-H is an organization that helps prepare young people for a future in agriculture by offering real-life experiences and training in the careers that might interest them. 4-H is a community comprised of members from more than 100 public universities across the nation. Participants engage in projects involving health, science, agriculture and citizenship. Adult mentors are there to guide, but as with FFA, the young men and women involved take the lead whenever possible.
A Responsibility and a Privilege
Bauer Built is proud to donate to organizations like FFA and 4-H. “Supporting youth in the farming industry is important to us,” says Ed Biederman, Ag Sales Director. “Many of our locations serve the rural community throughout the farm belt, and Bauer Built continues to support youth in various programs.” At Bauer Built, we’re grateful for the hard work of those in the agriculture industry, and we recognize the many ways they impact our lives for the better. Supporting the next generation of ag-experts is a responsibility and a privilege!
